home > volunteering opportunities > volunteering with witness service wandsworth What exactly do volunteers do?
The role of Witness Service volunteers is varied, however below is a guide to some of the work they undertake. Remember that all our volunteers are required to attend a training course before dealing with clients.
- Meet and greet witnesses/victims
- Inform the Co-ordinator, the usher and the CPS that witnesses have arrived
- Offer a pre-trial visit and provide information on court procedure and layout
- Answer any questions/queries
- Explain some of the court jargon
- Listen to and empathise with concerns and anxieties
- Be sensitive to witnesses who might have difficulty with reading or understanding what is happening
- Accompany witness/victim into court if requested
- Prepare witness/victims for the range of verdicts/sentences
- Refer witnesses/victims where appropriate (to other agencies)
- Provide Co-ordinator with a written report of all work undertaken on behalf of witnesses/victims
- Work as part of a team
