home Homophobic CrimeLike domestic violence and racist crime, homophobic crime cuts across different crime categories and includes a number of offences against gay men and lesbians, by people who are against them.
Crimes motivated by homophobia are not just attacks on individuals – they are also an attack on someone’s lifestyle and culture. They can leave you feeling frightened, demoralised, depressed and in despair. They can particularly diminish the victim’s self-esteem and make them feel isolated, powerless and angry.
It is particularly hard for victims to defend themselves against such incidents and the effects of the crime are made worse by the knowledge that someone was attacked simply because of who they are. Not only does this appear unjust, victims may feel they are denied access to criminal justice because they fear that reporting the crime might lead to them to the risk of retaliation.
Homophobic crime includes · Criminal damage · Verbal and physical abuse · Intimidation and harassment · Sexual violence · Murder
