home Hate CrimesWhat is a Hate crime? This is a crime where the perpetrator’s prejudice against any identifiable group of people is a factor in determining who is victimised.
A victim of Hate Crime does not have to be a member of a minority or someone who is generally considered to be ‘vulnerable’. For example, the friends of a visible minority ethnic person, lesbian or refugee may be victimised because of their association. In some cases the perpetrator’s perception may be wrong. This can result in a person entirely unconnected with the hate motivation becoming a victim. In reality, anyone can become a victim of hate crime.
At Victim Support Wandsworth we have a Hate Crimes Worker and trained volunteers dedicated to assisting people who are experiencing Domestic Violence, Racist or Homophobic crimes. Please see the relevant section for more information on how we may be able to assist.
Hate Crimes fall inside 3 areas: 1. Domestic Violence 2. Racist incidents 3. Homophobic crime
If you are a victim of Hate Crime what can you do? Talk to someone, don’t suffer in silence. Even if you don’t want to report it to the police talking to someone can often help.
Keep a record of the time, dates, place and what happened. This is helpful if you ever want to take action e.g. report the crime to an agency.
If you want to report the crime or find out more about reporting a crime but don’t’ want to go to a police station Hate Crimes can be reported at our office. See Third Party reporting section.
