Q.  How will I know if I’m needed in court?

A. You will be sent a witness warning letter from the Criminal Justice Unit /Traffic Unit. This letter will tell you what date, time, and which court to attend.

Q. What should I do if I can’t make the trial date?

A. You must let the Criminal Justice Unit/Traffic Unit know as soon as possible. Their telephone number is on the witness-warning letter.

Q. Will the defendant see me in court?

A. Yes, but you do not have to look at the defendant unless you are asked to.

Q. Will I need a lawyer?

A. No, the Crown Prosecution Service will represent you if you are a prosecution witness.  If you are a witness for the defence, the defence representative will represent you or the defendant if they do not have a representative.

Q. How long will I be in court?

A. There is no set time given for a trial, so be prepared to have that day free from any other arrangements.

Q. What childcare facilities are available?

A. You will have to make your own arrangements for children as we are not insured to look after them and we don’t have any facilities at Court.

Q. Will I be paid expenses for attending court?

A. Yes, the Crown Prosecution Service will send you a from to fill in and send back to the their office with a per-paid envelope.

Q. Will I have to come back to court again?

A. Possibly, if the trial gets adjourned. This means the trial will be set for another date in the near future.

Q. What should I do if I’m harassed after going to

court?

A. You must report this straight away to the Police.

Q. What if I can’t remember what happened?

A. You will be given your statement when you arrive at court to refresh your memory. However, you will not be able to take your statement into court with you when you give evidence.
