home Frequently Asked QuestionsQ. Will I have to attend an interview? A.There is a pre basic training interview and assessment in order to meet with applicants and answer any questions.
Q. Is there an examination at the end of the training course? A. There is a post basic training test and interview to assess competencies and standards of training given and received. All questions on the test will have been covered during training and there is a competency assessment based on responses to case scenarios.
Q. Can I volunteer for Victim Support and the Witness Service? A. Due to time commitments and other overlapping restrictions it is not possible to volunteer for both VSW and WWS. Some VSW work might involve accompanying clients to court as a support volunteer.
Q. How often can I come in? A. Volunteers are required to attend supervision every two months and ongoing training as arranged. This would involve at least three workshops a year.
Volunteers are able to see clients in the office. We welcome volunteers coming in to the office as much as possible as we can check on how they are with their support work and any other matters that might arise.
Q. I can only offer time in the evenings? A.Volunteers make contact with clients and arrange mutually agreeable times to meet. This might be evenings, weekends or day times. It depends on the case and the volunteer’s other commitments. Clients are allocated with consideration of the volunteer’s availability.
Q. Do you have any weekend work? A. Please read the above answer
Q. Will I be safe visiting people’s homes? A. All aspects of volunteer safety are taken very seriously and we provide basic and ongoing personal safety training and awareness. Personal alarms can be issued if you would prefer.
Q. Do you need references? A. Two references which are not family or friends are required. References are preferably from someone who has known the applicant for more than two years in a professional capacity. On successful application to the basic training checks are made with the Criminal records Bureau.
Q. What is Supervision? A. Supervision for volunteer support workers is a process to check on the competencies and capabilities with respect to client work, VSW policies and procedures and client and volunteer safety. We provide group supervision every two months and in some cases if necessary one to one meetings.
Distinct from the more informal ongoing office, telephone and peer support, supervision is a formalised process where volunteers present client cases and have the opportunity to receive guidance, help, information and advice from the supervisor and peers. It is also an opportunity to discuss any other concerns or issues, ongoing training needs and requests. Written notes are taken by the supervisor and kept in the volunteer’s personal file.
Q. What expenses will you pay? A. Volunteers are able to claim expenses in respect to their work with clients. This covers, telephone and travel costs. Other expenses need to be cleared with the coordinator beforehand. |
