home Murder and manslaughterInformation for bereaved relatives and friends
It can be difficult to sort our practical matters while you are coping with losing someone suddenly. VSW can help you to deal with the demands and the pressure. We can also help you with claiming criminal injuries compensation (CICA).
Losing someone through a violent crime is a devastating experience. In the aftermath of the crime you may have strong and overpowering feelings such as shock, disbelief, numbness or panic. Every person experiences bereavement differently and often feelings change from day-to-day. Over a period of time people often feel a wide range of emotions, you may feel angry, guilty, depressed and sometimes suicidal. Although life may never be the same again, talking about the experience can help.
What we can do:· Offer someone independent to talk to · Offer a different volunteer for different members of the family · Give information on the Criminal Justice System, including Police investigations, the role of the Coroner and court procedures · Accompany you to the Police station and Coroner’s court · Refer you to the Witness Service
If you need specialist information and advice, VSW can put you in touch with other people who may be able to help, such as:
